GOP poised to leap on spending abuses in stimulus, an AP article on Yahoo News, describes the Republican's sudden determination to focus on abuses of spending. Odd enough, given 6 years of control in the Congress when the last thing they did was pay attention to any fiscal responsibility.

The article highlights exactly why they've changed their focus:

"Republicans are preparing to pounce on any wasteful spending in the $787 billion stimulus package as they refocus their criticisms of a measure whose success could hurt their 2010 election prospects."

Vicious bastards like Rush Limbaugh have already come and said it straight out. Republicans can't afford to have President Obama or the Democrats rescue the economy because that sort of success would be a continued condemnation to their party's governing. It doesn't matter that a success would mean more money in everyone's pockets, not just the already wealthy. It doesn't matter that there'd be fewer people on the streets or that the nation could rise again as leaders in the worldview.

All that matters is that election time brings votes. So they'll do everything they can to see that Obama's best efforts fail.

How could anyone actually want these people in office? The Republican party had their chance and today's economic climate is the result. If they really believed in fiscal responsibility than we wouldn't be here. To outright act to ensure failure on the part of the Democrats out of an all-consuming greed for power? That's despicable.

The thing that upsets me the most, though, is that so few Republican supporters alllow themselves to see that. Instead they listen to blowhards like Limbaugh and Coulter so they don't have to do any thinking for themselves.

We don't have to like the Stimulus package, nor do we have to like those who put it in place. It's there now, and nothing can stop it. Instead, the leaders of this country should be doing everything they can to ensure that it works. Petty vidictiveness and powermongering have no place in desperate times like these. Give people their jobs back, rebuild stability that we can count on and then let's worry about the elections and whose governance is right or wrong.

Sadly not a one of them, Democrat or Republican, is ever likely to think that way. As long as that's true, I fear we're doomed to failure.
