Excess

I read an article today that pissed me off. Republicans to flee D.C. for Inauguration, is pretty self-explanatory.

I don't care that they're leaving the city. What bothers me is how cheerfully, as is demonstrated in the article, the Republicans are jetting out to Las Vegas and holding massive parties, or flying out to Switzerland to do a week of skiing, or sunbathing on the beach in the Bahamas. In the midst of an economic nightmare that they bear some responsibility for, they are leaving on the spur of the moment to spend thousands of dollars playing even as their constituents are having trouble keeping their jobs or paying for their homes.

I know that this is what politics is, and I'm sure that people see a story and think, "What's so unusual about that?" Barak Obama, after all, spent his Christmas in Hawaii. Nevermind that he was born there, it certainly happens equally with both Democrats and Republicans.

Still, there's just something so offensive about how casual these people are about it. Bernanke and Paulson are giving money to banks and insurance companies to do whatever they want with, Congress grilled the arrogant automotive bastards and yelled at them about their private jets but they're not at all different.

In the meantime the rest of us just accept it. I just wish people would be a little outraged about all these excesses.
